Amazon.co.uk Review

Arguably the most intelligently written film to feature the masterful stop-motion animation of Ray Harryhausen, Jason and the Argonauts is a colorful adventure that takes full advantage of Harryhausen's "Dynarama" process. Inspired by the Greek myth, the story begins when the fearless explorer Jason (Todd Armstrong) returns to the kingdom of Thessaly to make his rightful claim to the throne, but the gods proclaim that he must first find the magical Golden Fleece. Consulting Hera, the queen of gods, Jason recruits the brave Argonauts to crew his ship, and they embark on their eventful journey. Along the way they encounter a variety of mythic creatures, including the 100-foot bronze god Talos, the batlike Harpies, the seven-headed reptilian Hydra, and an army of skeletons wielding sword and shield. That last sequence remains one of the finest that Harryhausen ever created, and it's still as thrilling as anything from the age of digital special effects. Harryhausen was the true auteur of his fantasy films and his brilliant animation evokes a timeless sense of wonder. Jason and the Argonauts is a prime showcase for Harryhausen's talent--a wondrous product of pure imagination and filmmaking ingenuity. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Addition to the DVD Catalogue, 13 April 2003

Now 40 years old, this popular film makes a welcome addition to the ever growing DVD catalogue. Filmed in Italy with an astounding cast, it never fails to entertain. What I like about this disc is that it contains interviews with Ray Harryhausen who explains how his interest in dynamation came about. He has certainly left his mark on the cinema. My only reservation about this disc though is that picture quality is rather inconsistant. Some scenes show excellent detail, but others are rather grainy. Still, sound is more than acceptable and it shouldnt put off cinema enthusiasts like myself. I wish I could have given it a five, but inconsistant picture lowers its markings. A good buy though, and still enjoyable even after all these years. Look out for the rising of Neptune out of the sea in the thrilling "Clashing Rocks" sequence; the capture of the "Harpies"; and even more frightening, the 100 foot tall Talos, one of the Titans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film, shame about the quality., 18 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Having just acquired a DVD player I quickly set about obtaining copies of my favourite films, Argonauts being one of them. This really is a great film: superb sets & effects, decent acting, and an intelligent screenplay. Even when taking into account the age of the film and the limitations of the stop-frame animation, I was really disappointed with the quality of the "print" in several scenes. Surely a better copy could have been obtained? On a plus point the extras are good and informative but the biographies of the leads are a waste of space. In comparison, and also released by Colombia Pictures, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad is top-quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ray Harryhausen has done it again, 26 Dec 2002
Along with "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad", Ray Harryhausen has created the most life-like special effects on screen. Even though the acting by Todd Armstrong is a little wooden, it still is one of the best Harryhausen films ever made. My favourite seen is the fight between Jason and the Seven Headed Hydra. NOT TO BE MISSED.
